Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems 2005 (CHES 2005)
Edinburgh, Scotland |
Transport by bus is fast, cheap and easy in Edinburgh. The local buses (Lothian Buses) provide good transport from Pollock Halls and from areas with bed and breakfast accommodation. The cost is 80p or £1 per trip, paid to driver. No change is given. Bus numbers and routes are to be found on their website.
Note that the roads have changed slightly at the West End (of Princes' Street), immediately next to Charlotte Square. Queensferry Road now opens into Princes' Street, and some buses have been re-routed to avoid Charlotte Square. As of Aug 9th, Lothian Buses has not yet updated its web page details to show these changes.
Airport & Airport BusEdinburgh airport has flights to and from many international destinations. Directions to and from the airport are given here. Public service bus stops are located at stand 18 on the terminal forecourt road outside the UK arrivals hall, beside which is a taxi rank. There is an express bus service to Edinburgh city centre (number 100) which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you are staying in the conference hotel, ask for the "West End". The bus stop is in Shandwick Place, within a few hundred yards of the conference hotel. Otherwise, the bus terminates at Waverley station where a taxi can be taken to anywhere in the city. The ticket cost is £3.00 single, £5.00 return. Tickets can be brought from an onward travel desk in the UK arrivals hall, the airport information desk in the International arrivals hall, or on the bus itself. Glasgow Airport is much larger than Edinburgh and therefore may be much more convenient for flights. It is easy to reach Edinburgh from here by bus. The 905 Citylink bus from Bays 1/2 has a connecting service from the centre of Glasgow to Edinburgh. (Trains require taking a bus to Paisley, then walking between two stations in Glasgow.) |

Delegates are very strongly advised not to bring cars to Edinburgh as parking is very difficult & very expensive, and roads & routes are deliberately designed to impede private vehicles. However, the hotel has 20 parking spaces at £10 / 24 hours for residents on a first come first served basis. There is also an "NCP car park 5 mins walk away from the hotel in Castle Terrace (Choose the Car Park Finder" tab and enter the hotel post code, namely EH2 4HQ to obtain directions.) It costs slightly more, but the hotel can obtain a discount. Ask for a voucher at hotel reception.
Tickets and train times can be obtained from The Trainline or National Rail. Edinburgh Waverley is the nearest station (1.2km, 3/4 mile) to the hotel, and it has a taxi rank.
