Description

This is the only seaside waterfall in Asia where the water falls directly into the sea. In the summer, the falling water looks like a bolt of white silk unrolling down the fall. Thus it is called Jeongbang Summer Fall, one of the 10 Scenic Wonders of Yeongju (an old name for Jeju).

Located near Seogwipo, the waterfall is 23m high, 8m wide and 8m deep. The falling water which creates rainbows, mysteriously looking cliffs, thick forests of Mt. Halla and the nearby isles make visitors feel cool and refreshed.

On the cliff of Jeongbang Waterfall, the phrase, ‘Seobul Gwacha’, is engraved. It means Seobul passed by here on his way to find a herb of eternal youth in Mt Halla, one of the three spiritual mountains in Korea. Around 240 B. C., Emperor Chin of China ordered him to collect the herb for his immortality. After he failed to find this herb, he went back to the west. The name, Seogwipo, is thought to have originated from this story.

About 300m east of Jeongbang Waterfall, there is Little Jeongbang Waterfall, which has 10 branches of water and is 5 m in height. Many people stand under it in the summer because they believe this is good for their health and is especially helpful for rheumatism. Korean travel agencies include this site in their itinerary for Chinese tourists and the waterfall is considered a must.

Description

Dragon Head Rock is a symbol of Jeju. It is located on the west coast of Jeju-shi and is always crowded with tourists. Legend claims that once an emissary of the Dragon King ordered a search for the elixir of life on Mt.Halla. The mountain spirit was so enraged that he shot the Dragon King with an arrow. The Dragon King fled to the sea but was turned to stone. His body was submerged but his head reared up towards heaven.

Yongyeon (Dragon Pool), 200 M East of Dragon Head Rock, was believed to be a favorite playground of dragons. Our ancestors loved to go boating on the clear Waters with the steep cliffs rising above. It is especially beautiful on summer nights when the reflection of the full moon makes it look like a fairyland. The near by coast road is a favorite place for evening drives.
