Virtual membership meeting - Eurocrypt 2020 Tuesday May 12, 2020 (Supporting slides are available on the IACR website.) President Michel Abdalla opened the meeting at 18h16. He recalled that this is the first virtual Membership meeting and he was happy to see so much participation: 220 unique users over Zoom and 237 over YouTube. The President gave a brief overview of the IACR, its conference/workshops, etc. He reminded the membership that three of the directors have terms expiring this year. Treasurer Brian LaMacchia gave a report summarizing the IACR's finances. The IACR continues to have a robust financial position: despite the current situation the IACR has sufficient reserves to weather COVID 19. The Treasurer did not see any reason to change the membership fee. The Membership Secretary Douglas Stebila presented the Membership Report. He recalled the benefits of membership and showed membership by year. The President continued to give an overview of the IACR services and the new look-and-feel of the website. He used this opportunity to thank Kay McKelly and Kevin McCurley for all their work to make this Virtual event happen. At 19h08 the President opened the discussion. McCurley explained the Members this is the first IACR virtual event and asked for suggestions or things to change. Chloe Martindale recalled that the IACR has been discussing how to reduce the carbon footprint as a community. There are a lot of ideas: could we organize a dedicated panel around this topic? The President agreed this is a good idea; he mentioned that the possibility of running hybrid conferences is also being discussed by the Board. There is a question how we can collect input and ideas. The President recommended to use the current chat or e-mail anyone in the Board. McCurley explained that the current chat will be torn down after the conference and will not be stored. Mark Wooding wondered, given that the Eurocrypt registration was free this year how much of a dent has that put in the IACR finances; and moreover, what the expected registration fees for future virtual conferences might be. The Treasurer explained that this has not put a big dent in our financial reserves. The proposal for future events is to pass along the cost for running the virtual infrastructure. He stressed that it is important we maintain membership: this is why for now only membership fees were charged. Mehdi Tibouchi asked how the IACR plans to deal with the different time zones for the virtual events. The President explained that this is a decision up to the General Chairs of the conference. The meeting was closed at 19h22.
