Thursday Banquet & Beach Trip

Banquet dinner on Thursday 7pm will be at Sage Restaurant on Newport Coast. The vans will first stop at Beachcomber Restaurant (& Pubc) at Crystal Cove Park. If you follow the link above you'll get to google map which shows this park immediately to the north of the Sage Restaurant.

Venue

PKC'09 will be hosted by Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine, in Irvine, California. The meetings will take place at the Calit2 Institute, a research center and a conference facility located next door to the Bren Hall. (Because of a construction in the building patio, we'll have to use the side doors to enter the CalIT building. Here's the link to the CalIT2 building plan map with these two side doorways marked.)

General Area Map

Below is a Google map of the UC Irvine campus and its immediate vicinity, marking the conference venue (yellow pin), the nearest airport (John Wayne Orange County Airport, a.k.a. the Santa Ana Airport), and two hotels with special low UCI rates, Atrium and Crowne Plaza (see more below).

Transportation between our hotels (Atrium & Crowne Plaza) and the Conference Venue

Dear PKC09 Attendee: If you are staying at either Atrium or Crowne Plaza and you need shuttle transportation to the CalIT building at UCI, here are the instructions:

If you are staying at Atrium, there will be four shuttle vans departing from the hotel lobby at 8:20am on each day of the conference. They should fit about 45 people, which should be enough for us. They are run by "Mark's van and town car" service, and their phone #'s are 714 747 8294 or 949 351 8377. If you miss these vans, ask the hotel for a free shuttle to UCI. They have a small van which goes to UCI at 8:30, but it fits only eight people, so if you miss that too, ask for a taxi: It should be about $15.

If you are staying at Crowne Plaza, there will be a shuttle van picking you up at 8:10 am from the hotel on each day of the conference. The van is run by "Mark's van and town car" service, and their phone #'s are 714 747 8294 or 949 351 8377. If you miss this van, ask the hotel lobby for a free shuttle to UCI, and ask for a taxi if they cannot provide this service: A taxi should be about $15.

All vans will be going back to the hotels at 5:30pm, except on Friday, when they will come back to the hotels at 1:30pm.

Taxi Information

Calit2 does not have a specific address. It's building #325 on the UCI map, but to the taxi's give them the cross streets of Los Trancos and East Peltason, Irvine. If they need the zip code, it's "CA 92697". If they use those two cross streets it should come up on their maps or gps. When you call the taxi, ask them to estimate the cost!

Other Hotels

Although staying at one of the above two hotels will be most convenient for attendees who do not rent their own cars, there are many other hotels close by. Here is a sampling of those closest to the campus. However, attendees who plan to rent a car can also easily stay in more picturesque settings on the Orange County coast, 5-10 miles from the campus, (See the local attractions page for more information about the area of Irvine, CA.)

Local Transportation

Irvine is located in Orange County, 5 miles east of the Newport Coast, approximately 45 miles south of Los Angeles, and approximately 60 miles north of San Diego. (See also the local attractions page for general introduction to the Irvine area.)

For the duration of the conference we will organize transportation for the attendees who choose not to rent a car to and from the two hotels above. However, for those attendees who would like to explore the area on their own, please note that traveling around Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area is most easily accomplished via car. The area does have bus and trains lines (for information on local public transportation options please visit the Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA) Website), but public transportation is very sparse and it is designed to serve only local commuters.
