Abstract: The first ideas relating to NTRU emerged in 1994-95 as an attempt to translate a certain one way function with roots in analytic number theory into a public key cryptosystem. I'll explain how a sequence of unsuccessful attempts in this direction eventually evolved, first into a not particularly successful signature scheme called PASS, and finally into a public key cryptosystem called NTRU.
